On a nice night, who doesn't want to be outdoors underneath the stars? This summer you can relax under the stars and enjoy a great production at Starlight Theater, located in Swope Park. In the summer of 2008, Starlight is putting on five different productions.
Running from June 17-22 is the five-time Tony Award-winning production of The Drowsy Chaperone. The story is framed in the favorite song of "Man in Chair," the lead character who is a die-hard musical fan. The story, which unfolds in Man in Chair's living room, is about a Broadway Starlet's journey to find love.
Looking for a great show for the whole family? Head out to Starlight July 15-20 to see High School Musical. Based on the Disney Channel's hit movie, the Chicago Tribune calls it a "pumped up, Broadway-style show that delivers excitement and spectacle!" High School Musical is about Troy, Captain of the basketball team, and Gabrielle, a smart transfer student. Watch as these two attempt to take the lead in the school musical while getting caught up in peer pressure and high school cliques.
The Music Man, showing from July 28 - August 3, tells the story of Professor Harold Hill, a shifty salesman who has just arrived in River City, Iowa. As the townspeople gather around to hear his sales pitch, he tells them that a pool table is being brought to the town and that their youth will be swept into delinquency. He offers to help by gathering the young boys and teaching them how to play music in a band, all the while selling them their instruments and uniforms. The music man plans to leave town before teaching the group of boys any music, but unexpectedly falls for the town librarian.
Beginning August 11 you can see Fiddler on the Roof, which is a musical set in Russia in the early 20th century. Fiddler on the Roof is about a father who is determined to find the perfect men to marry his three eldest daughters. This, of course, does not go over well with his daughters who have already found their own loves.
Starlight wraps up their summer productions with Les Miserables, running September 10-16. Les Miserables has won eight Tony Awards and is one of the most successful musicals in history. It is about a man named Valjeen who has been imprisoned for nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread. The musical takes the audience through his journey of trying to escape imprisonment.
Tickets for all of these productions go on sale May 18. For more information, go to http://www.kcstarlight.com/.
